Suffering Bastard

A SUFFERING BASTARD blends gin and bourbon equally into ginger beer. This Mule cocktail “suffers” the consequences of not being a pure-breed like the Moscow Mule (vodka) or Dark ‘n Stormy (rum) — suffering only in that it is less known. But just as with canines, sometimes the mixed breed is the best and the friendliest. This Mule drink is in fact very friendly to the palate. It still packs a fair punch with its 50-60% hard liquor mixed into the spicy fizz of ginger beer. Though this was created originally as a hangover remedy, suffering does not come to mind when drinking one.

Requirements: bourbon, gin, ginger beer, lime juice, Angostura bitters, orange wedge and/or mint sprig garnish

  • 1 oz. bourbon
  • 1 oz. dry gin
  • 1 tsp. lime juice
  • 1 dash Angostura bitters
  • 3-4 oz. chilled ginger beer

Mix all ingredients except ginger beer in an ice-filled shaker. Shake to chill and pour over ice into an Old-Fashioned glass. Stir in ginger beer and garnish with an orange wedge and/or a mint sprig.

History: It was reportedly created by the bar steward, Joe Scialom, at the Shepheard Hotel in Cairo, 1942, and meant as a hangover remedy for military troops during WWII.
