Bolero

This dark rum & brandy version of the BOLERO is fruity, yet complex. The proportions in the mix largely depends on your taste for dark rum (I prefer Myers’s Dark). My favored mix emphasizes the dark rum, but still has enough sweet & tart layers to make it interesting. It’s a great warm-weather refreshment for any occasion. If in Pittsburgh, maybe you can sneak one in during Pittsburgh Symphony’s performance of Bolero !

Requirements: dark rum, brandy or cognac, lime juice, orange juice, simple syrup, lime wheel

  • 1.5 oz. to 2 oz.dark rum
  • 1 oz. brandy or cognac
  • .75 oz. fresh lime juice
  • .5 oz. orange juice
  • .5 oz. simple syrup
  • 1 lime wheel or wedge garnish

Mix all liquid ingredients in an ice-filled shaker. Shake vigorously and strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with a lime wheel or wedge.

Comments: Some mixes suggest equal parts dark rum, brandy and lime juice (1 ounce each). The mix above has more balance and as mentioned, favors a more rum flavor. Unless the preference is for a very tart-sour drink, I wouldn’t use more than 3/4 ounces of lime juice.
