Revolver

The REVOLVER introduces coffee liqueur to an Old-Fashioned style cocktail and fires flames at an orange peel to garnish. It’s a win-win cocktail for everyone — minimal ingredients that make it easy to make and delicious no matter the skills of the server. This West Coast mix from 2004 is difficult to find in cocktail books. But it’s well-known and reportedly a very popular bar order.

Requirements: bourbon, coffee liqueur (original Kahlua preferred), orange bitters, orange peel (silver-dollar shaped) for garnish

  • 2 oz. bourbon
  • 1/2 oz. coffee liqueur
  • 2 dashes orange bitters
  • 1 orange peel for garnish

Add ingredients to a half-filled mixing glass and stir for at least 25 seconds to chill. Strain into a chilled cocktail or coup glass. Cut a silver-dollar sized orange peel and place over the drink. Hold a flame under the orange side of the peel briefly and then squeeze the oils into the mix. Drop the orange peel into the drink. History: The drink was created in 2004 by bartender Jon Santer in San Francisco. It uncharacteristically contained none of the more common produce or citrus ingredients originating from most California recipes.

Comment: My concoction pictured above would more accurately be called a “Mudslide Revolver” because the Kahlua contained dairy. If original Kahlua or another type of non-dairy coffee liqueur is used as preferred, the Revolver would appear brown (as in the video link above). Nonetheless, the drink above was delicious and proves the point that home bartenders can sometimes improvise.
