Zombie

The ZOMBIE cocktail has been interpreted in many ways since its creation in 1934. Donn Beach and his Los Angeles bar, Don the Beachcomber, are credited not only with inventing the drink but also with launching the entire Tiki trend, which later included Trader Vic’s. The Zombie usually contains three types of rum, lime juice, a citrus juice (either orange or pineapple), and grenadine. The original rum selection included a light rum, a dark rum, and a 150-proof rum floater. The recipe below is one of the simplest:
Requirements: light rum, dark (El Dorado preferred) or golden rum, 150-proof rum (Demerara rum preferred), orange juice, sweetened lime juice (Master of Mixes preferred), grenadine, and garnishes of an orange wedge, maraschino cherry and pineapple.
- 1 oz. light rum
- 1 oz. golden or dark rum
- 1 oz. 150-proof rum
- ½ oz. sweetened lime juice
- ½ oz. grenadine
- 3 oz. orange juice
- 1 orange wedge, 1 pineapple wedge, 1 maraschino cherry
Add light rum, dark (or golden) rum, lime juice and orange juice to a shaker filled with ice. Fill a hurricane glass with ice and add grenadine, allowing it to sink to the bottom. Shake the rum and juice mixture to chill, then pour it into the hurricane glass. Add the one-ounce 150-proof rum as a floater on top. Drop the garnishes into the drink and serve.
Comments: Legend has it that Don Beach served the Zombie to a regular customer to cure a hangover. The customer reportedly claimed it made him feel like a zombie, giving the drink its famous name. Other ingredients sometimes used in Zombie recipes include falernum, Pernod, Angostura bitters, orange liqueur, passion fruit juice, cinnamon syrup, spiced rum, simple syrup and pineapple juice — not all in the same recipe. There have even been contests to award the best Zombie recipe.
