Churchill

The scotch-based CHURCHILL was created as a dedication to the man, but not a cocktail he drank. Winston Churchill drank watered-down blended scotch almost any time of the day, but did not like mixed cocktails. With the added flavoring of lime juice and orange liqueur, this drink is shaken and not stirred. The citrus flavors enrich the more standard Rob Roy combo of scotch and sweet vermouth without making it sweet.

Requirements: blended scotch whisky, sweet vermouth, Cointreau, lime juice

  • 1.5 oz. blended scotch
  • .5 oz. sweet vermouth
  • .5 oz. Cointreau
  • .5 oz. fresh lime juice

Add ingredients to an ice-filled shaker. Shake vigorously and strain into a chilled coupe or cocktail glass.

History: Winston Churchill favored Johnny Walker Red, a relatively inexpensive scotch. Since he watered down the scotch, he wouldn’t get buzzed even though it was a daily beverage staple for him. This dedication cocktail was created by barman Joe Gilmore who worked at The Savoy hotel’s American Bar in London, 1940 to 1976.

Comments: Some recipes suggest using Johnny Walker blended scotch and Dolin sweet vermouth; my Dewar’s scotch with Carpano Antica Formula sweet vermouth was great. The smokiness of the scotch mixed with equal amounts of the other three ingredients made for a well-rounded complex imbibement, and very enjoyable.
