Churchill

The scotch-based CHURCHILL was created as a dedication to the man, but not a cocktail he personally drank. With the added flavor of lime juice and orange liqueur, this drink is shaken rather than stirred. The citrus flavors enhance the classic Rob Roy combo of scotch and sweet vermouth without making it sweet.
Requirements: blended scotch whisky, sweet vermouth, Cointreau, lime juice
- 1.5 oz. blended scotch
- .5 oz. sweet vermouth
- .5 oz. Cointreau
- .5 oz. fresh lime juice
Add ingredients to an ice-filled shaker. Shake vigorously and strain into a chilled coupe or cocktail glass.
History: Winston Churchill drank watered-down blended scotch almost any time of the day but did not like mixed cocktails. He reportedly favored Johnny Walker Red, a relatively inexpensive scotch. By diluting the scotch, he wouldn’t get buzzed even though it was a daily beverage staple for him. This tribute cocktail was created by barman Joe Gilmore, who worked at The Savoy Hotel’s American Bar in London from 1940 to 1976.
Comments: Some recipes suggest using Johnny Walker blended scotch and Dolin sweet vermouth; however, I found that Dewar’s scotch paired well with Carpano Antica Formula sweet vermouth. The smokiness of the scotch, combined with equal parts of the other three ingredients, created a well-rounded, complex drink that was very enjoyable.
