Gibson

The GIBSON is a classic martini, usually gin, garnished with a pickled cocktail onion rather than an olive or lemon twist. It’s an unusual gin martini because it doesn’t use any bitters as others do. The cocktail onion adds a deeper flavor that is a savory compliment to the botanical flavors of gin. Vodka can also be used instead of gin and by its milder nature will allow the vermouth and pickled onion flavors to be more present.

Requirements: gin (or vodka), dry vermouth, pickled cocktail onion for garnish

  • 2.5 oz. gin (or vodka)
  • 1 oz. dry vermouth
  • 1 cocktail onion for garnish

Add gin (or vodka) and dry vermouth to an ice-filled mixing glass and stir until icy chilled. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass and garnish with a cocktail onion.

Comments: Fresh pickled onions can be made at home by soaking some cocktail onions in vinegar, sugar and pickling spices. Many cocktail bars and restaurants do so to make their drinks especially fresh and tasty. History: The Gibson was believed to originate from a San Francisco bar in the late 1800’s. It appeared in a 1908 book titled The World’s Drinks and How To Mix Them, by William Boothby.
