Rob Roy

The ROB ROY is the scotch version of the rye or bourbon Manhattan. It’s a classic that has survived the test of time and is a regular bar order for many. It’s easy to prepare at home. It requires either a blended or single-malt scotch whisky as the base spirit.

Requirements: single malt or blended Scotch, sweet vermouth, Angostura bitters, maraschino or brandied cherries.

  • 3 oz. (2 jiggers) Scotch whisky
  • 1.5 oz. (1 jigger) sweet vermouth
  • 2 dashes Angostura bitters
  • 2 cherries, maraschino or brandied

Combine all liquid ingredients into an ice-filled mixing glass and stir at least 15 seconds. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass and garnish with two cherries.

Comments: If serving more than one Rob Roy, it’s perfectly okay to use something like Dewar’s or other blended Scotch. Serving one, I might choose a middle-shelf single malt. It’s recommended that a good sweet vermouth* be used regardless.
