New York Minute

The NEW YORK MINUTE has several cocktail renditions, my favorite being the recipe published by Difford’s Guide. The drink might have earned its name because it tastes like a Manhattan, a tequila version. It’s fast to prepare because it requires no citrus-squeezing prep. The parallels to a Manhattan are the reposado tequila for whiskey, maraschino for cherries, and the sweet vermouth & bitters which are common to both. It’s fun to distinguish the notes of maraschino, barrel-aged oak and hint of coffee in each sip. It leans on a higher end of the sweetness scale while packing a punch, and makes a great after-dinner drink or an anytime stand-alone drink.

Requirements: tequila reposado, sweet vermouth (Antica Formula preferred), Maraschino liqueur (Luxardo preferred), whiskey barrel-aged bitters (Fee Brothers preferred), simple syrup (optional), 3 coffee beans for garnish

  • 1.75 oz. (52.5 ml.) tequila reposado
  • 2/3 oz. (20 ml.) sweet vermouth
  • 1/2 oz. (15 ml.) Maraschino liqueur
  • 1 dash whiskey barrel-aged bitters
  • 1 tsp. simple syrup (optional)
  • 3 coffee beans for garnish

Stir all ingredients in an ice-filled mixing glass and strain into a chilled coup or martini glass. Top with three coffee beans.

History: It reportedly originates from a mixologist in Melbourne, Australia — Luke Whearty — and later a cocktail bar called Duck & Cover in Copenhagen, Denmark, 2014.

Comments: I enjoyed this as a slightly sweeter version of a Manhattan, tequila-style. It has balanced layers of complexity that keep it interesting. I found that simple syrup was not necessary with the brands that I used (pictured above). I used the standard Fee Brothers bitters which was fine. The coffee beans aren’t necessary, but they add a nice hint of coffee aroma and flavor that goes well with it.
