Painkiller (“Plain Killer”)

For the record, a PAINKILLER is a Pina Colada-style rum cocktail using Pusser’s Rum only. The “PLAIN KILLER,” featured in the recipe below, tweaks the same by using El Dorado 15-year Rum instead. El Dorado rum is from Guyana and its full robust flavor expands the original Painkiller mix into a richer and darker treat. This delicious recipe is similar to a Pina Colada but cuts back on the pineapple juice, adds orange juice, and substitutes aged rum for white rum.

Requirements: El Dorado 15-year Aged Rum, pineapple juice, orange juice, Coco Lopez coconut cream, fresh grated nutmeg or cherry garnish

  • 2 oz. El Dorado 15-year rum
  • 1.5 oz. pineapple juice
  • 1 oz. orange juice
  • 1 oz. Coco Lopez coconut cream
  • 1 cherry or freshly grated nutmeg topping for garnish

Add ingredients to an ice-filled shaker. Shake to chill and pour ingredients, including ice, into a highball glass or Tiki mug. Garnish with a cherry or sprinkle freshly grated nutmeg on top.

History: Pusser’s Rum trademarked the 1970’s Virgin Island drink Painkiller as there own in the 1980’s. So when the award-winning chef, Tory Miller, of The Deja Food Restaurant Group in Madison, Wisconsin created a similar rum drink featuring El Dorado 15-year rum instead of Pusser’s, he changed the name to Plain Killer and modified the recipe to suit the rum.

Comments: El Dorado 15-year is described as having tones of oak, vanilla, dark chocolate and coffee. By contrast, the Pusser’s Rum reportedly has notes of molasses, dried fruit and island spices. Regardless of the name and trademarks, the El Dorado 15-year Painkiller or Plain Killer is a wonderful mix for the home bartender, whether at the pool, beach or living room. If ordering at a bar, it’s probably easier to ask for “a Painkiller with El Dorado 15-year rum and just a quarter of the standard pineapple juice.”
