Manhattan Sweet w/ Bitter Chocolate

The MANHATTAN SWEET W/ BITTER CHOCOLATE adds a teaspoon of crème de cacao and maraschino liqueur, along with a dash of chocolate bitters, to the classic Manhattan. This addition perfectly complements the bourbon and vermouth with nuanced hints of chocolate and cherry. The word sweet in the name refers more to the sweet vermouth than to chocolate. This is not a dessert drink (unless you add a chocolate garnish); it’s more dry than sweet.
Requirements: bourbon, sweet vermouth, crème de cacao, Maraschino liqueur, chocolate bitters
- 2 oz. bourbon
- 3/4 oz. sweet vermouth
- 1 tsp. crème de cacao
- 1 tsp. Maraschino liqueur
- 6 drops (2-3 dashes) chocolate bitters
Add all ingredients to an ice-filled mixing glass. Stir to chill, then strain into a chilled coupe or cocktail glass. Garnish with a square of 80% cocoa dark chocolate (optional).
History: This cocktail was reportedly created in April 2017 by Simon Difford at London’s The Cabinet Room.
Comments: If you have the ingredients on hand, consider using them in your next Manhattan. The added components create a wonderfully complex bourbon cocktail.
