Shirley Temple
For a long-standing non-alcohol cocktail, the SHIRLEY TEMPLE combines ginger ale or seven-up with grenadine, lime juice and maraschino cherries. The beauty of this drink is not only that it’s a fixture at every bar, but that there is room for substitution and improvisation, such as using real ginger beer to spice it up, or combining orange juice and seltzer in place of soda. The favored proportions and more common soda version is as follows:
REQUIREMENTS: fresh lime juice, grenadine, chilled ginger ale (or Sprite or 7-Up), maraschino cherries (Luxardo preferred)
- 1/2 oz. lime juice
- 1/2 oz. grenadine
- 5 oz. ginger ale (or Sprite, 7-Up)
- 1-3 maraschino cherries
Fill a highball or Collins glass with ice. Add lime juice and grenadine. Top with ginger ale or preferred soda and stir gently. Garnish with 1-3 maraschino cherries on a skewer.
Comments: The serving shown in the photo used 1 oz. fresh orange juice mixed with 4 oz. seltzer instead of ginger ale, and was delicious while less sweet. Actress Shirley Temple, who reportedly didn’t actually like Shirley Temple drinks because she thought most too sweet, would have enjoyed my orange-juice infused version. It’s recommended that the lime juice be freshly squeezed. Homemade grenadine will make the drink even better (see link below for making homemade grenadine).
