Whiskey Sour
The WHISKEY SOUR dates as far back as the presidency of Abraham Lincoln and at the time used egg white for smoothness and texture. Now, the egg white is optional, but it remains a classic Sour — meaning it’s a mixture of a spirit, the citrus of either lemon or lime, and a sweetener like simple syrup. If properly made it isn’t really sour, but balanced refreshingly between sweet & sour.
Requirements: bourbon (or Canadian whiskey), lemon juice, simple syrup, maraschino cherry & orange peel for garnish
- 2 oz. bourbon or Canadian whiskey
- 3/4 oz. lemon juice
- .5 oz. simple syrup
- 1 egg white (optional)
- 1 maraschino cherry & orange peel for garnish
If using egg white, dry shake (no ice) ingredients for 15 seconds to create foam. Add ice to the shaker and shake vigorously to chill. Strain into an ice-filled rocks or coupe glass. Garnish with an orange peel and maraschino cherry.
Comments: While the point of the Sour is to marry the whiskey to the lemon flavor, the simple syrup along with the maraschino cherry and orange peel will help tone down the tartness. The ingredients can be proportioned to suit individual taste.
