Manhattan Sweet w/ Bitter Chocolate
The MANHATTAN SWEET W/ BITTER CHOCOLATE adds a teaspoon of creme de cacao and Maraschino liqueur plus a dash of Chocolate bitters to the standard Manhattan. In so doing, the bourbon and vermouth are complimented to perfection with the hint of chocolate and cherry. The word sweet in the name refers more to the sweet vermouth than to chocolate. This is not a dessert drink (unless you eat a chocolate garnish); it’s more dry than sweet.
Requirements: bourbon, sweet vermouth, creme de cacao, Maraschino liqueur, chocolate bitters
- 2 oz. bourbon
- 3/4 oz. sweet vermouth
- 1 tsp. creme de cacao
- 1 tsp. Maraschino liqueur
- 6 drops (2-3 dashes) chocolate bitters
Add all ingredients to an ice-filled mixing glass. Stir to chill and strain into a chilled coupe or cocktail glass. Garnish with a square of 80% cocoa dark chocolate (optional).
History: It was reportedly created in April, 2017 by Simon Difford at London’s The Cabinet Room.
Comments: This Manhattan mix is a favorite here. If you have the ingredients on hand, use them in your next Manhattan. The added ingredients make for a scary-good bourbon cocktail. It’s flavor infusions aren’t enough to change the name of the cocktail completely, otherwise I might call it a Manhattan Maraschocolate Bitter.
