Scotch Cobbler
The SCOTCH COBBLER gets high marks for its taste, strength and simplicity. Scotch whisky combines with dashes of orange curacao, brandy and simple syrup directly into the drinking glass. A quick stir and you’re ready for an elevated Scotch experience without interference from vermouth or citrus juices. In that sense, and because it takes only about two minutes to make, this is a repeater, a go-to scotch cocktail.
Requirements: Scotch, orange curacao, brandy, simple syrup. orange twist or mint garnish (optional)
- 2 oz. Scotch
- 1/4 oz. orange curacao
- 1/2 tsp brandy
- 2 dashes simple syrup
Mix ingredients directly into an ice-filled Old-Fashioned glass (one large ice cube preferred). Stir 20-30 seconds to chill. Garnish with an orange peel or mint sprig (optional).
Comments: The Scotch Cobbler is more of a whisky Old-Fashioned experience. If orange curacao isn’t available, orange liqueur can be used. A couple dashes of orange bitters might be added. Also, Scotch is the star, so make it good. A decent single malt scotch is often preferred; but many serve it with blended scotch whisky like Dewar’s.
History: Variations of the cobbler recipes date back to bartending mixing manuals of 1862. I found this version in Complete World Bartender Guide, 1977, and is duplicated in other sources as well.
