Nordlig Lykke
The NORDLIG LYKKE (pronounced “Nore-lig Leek-ya”) won the 2021 cocktail competition in Reykjavík, sponsored by Brennivin. It features the popular Icelandic aquavit Brennivin combined, as it often is, with lime juice. The addition of ginger beer with aromatic bitters and maple syrup make this a very festive yet simple drink. Brennivin provides the botanical and savory flavor of caraway which turns out to be a nice compliment to ginger beer.
Requirements: Brennivin aquavit, lime juice, Canadian maple syrup, Angostura bitters, ginger beer
- 2 oz. Brennivin
- 1/2 – 1 oz. fresh lime juice
- 1 oz. maple syrup
- 2 dashes Angostura bitters
- 3-4 oz. ginger beer
Add everything except ginger beer to an ice-filled shaker. Shake to chill and strain into a Collins or rocks glass filled with ice. Top off with ginger beer and stir gently.
Comments: Since ginger beer is already sweetened, I prefer only 1/2 ounce of maple syrup. But for those in the mood for a cider-sweet drink, the full ounce is fine and provides the additional maple flavor as intended. The English translation of Nordlig Lykke is “Northern Joy”. Skal!
