Morning Glory

The MORNING GLORY mix of choice is a delicious 1906 bourbon/brandy cocktail from Louis’ Mixed Drinks. The dominant flavors are from bourbon and brandy (or cognac), with balancing from maraschino liqueur and bitters. Absinthe is called for, but only as a topper at the end and is the prevailing first scent as the glass tips toward the mouth.

Requirements: bourbon, brandy (or cognac), maraschino liqueur (Luxardo preferred), orange & Angostura bitters, simple syrup, absinthe

  • 2 oz. bourbon
  • 1 oz. brandy (or cognac)
  • 1 dash maraschino liqueur
  • 1 dash orange bitters
  • 1 dash Angostura bitters
  • 3/8 oz. simple syrup
  • 1 dash absinthe (aprox. 1 tsp.)

Add all ingredients except absinthe to an ice-filled mixing glass. Stir to chill and strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Add a dash of absinthe as topper.

Comments: As mentioned, the prevailing bourbon and brandy flavors are balanced nicely by the other ingredients. The finish carries tones of cherry, orange and anise.
