Mexican Firing Squad
The MEXICAN FIRING SQUAD is a delicious silver tequila cocktail for warm or cool weather. The traditional lime-and-tequila combo is embellished with the sweetness of grenadine and the bitters of Angostura. This is a great cocktail for enjoying a quality, mid-to-upper-shelf silver tequila.
Requirements: silver (blanco) tequila, grenadine, fresh lime juice, Angostura bitters, thin lime wheel for garnish
- 2 oz. silver tequila
- 3/4 oz. fresh lime juice
- 1/2 oz. grenadine
- 4 dashes Angostura bitters
- 1 thin lime slice for garnish
Add ingredients to an ice-filled shaker. Shake to chill and strain into an ice-filled rocks glass. Drop a thin lime slice onto the top of the drink.
History: Reportedly, it was discovered at a Mexico City bar in 1937 by a writer (Charles H. Baker) who two years later had it published in his book Gentleman’s Companion, Beaker and Flask.
Comments: If you’ve got a good tequila blanco that you prefer not to mix into margaritas, this is a great option. It showcases the tequila flavor while softening it. Since tequila sales have grown in the U.S. — especially high-end tequila — tequila’s summertime seasonality has become less important and is instead enjoyed year round.
