Golden Dawn
The GOLDEN DAWN is a fruity and tart, yet complex “martini.” It’s not a traditional martini with vermouth. But the bitters mixed with gin, apricot brandy and applejack give it a power-punch equivalent to a martini, even with added orange juice. On a strength scale of 1-5, with #5 being a Long Island Iced Tea, this earns a solid 4. The balance and complexity keep one asking which of these equal-part-ingredients make it so good.
Requirements: London dry gin, apricot brandy, applejack, orange juice, Angostura bitters, grenadine (optional)
- 3/4 oz. dry gin
- 3/4 oz. apricot brandy
- 3/4 oz. applejack brandy
- 3/4 oz. fresh orange juice
- 1/4 oz. (or a dash) of grenadine
- 2 dashes Angostura bitters
Add ingredients to an ice-filled shaker. Shake vigorously and strain into a chilled cocktail glass.
History: The Golden Dawn has variations. It usually always involves orange juice and either apricot brandy or apricot liqueur with the gin. Calvados, a brandy similar to applejack, made with apples, is often used. The bitters and grenadine aren’t always on the recipe list, but give it depth. The recipe developed from the 1960’s or ’70’s.
