French Connection
The FRENCH CONNECTION is an easy two-ingredient pour with no bar tools necessary. It’s similar to The Godfather cocktail, but mixes cognac with Italian amaretto instead of whiskey. The bright fruity notes of cognac combine nicely with the almond and fruit flavors of amaretto. It became popular in the 1970’s as an after-dinner drink because of its sweetness from the liqueur as well as its strength from cognac.
- 1.5 – 2 oz. cognac
- 1 oz. amaretto
Fill an Old-Fashioned rocks glass with ice. Combine the two ingredients in the glass and stir to chill.
History: It was created by an unknown person in the early 1970’s and named for the Gene Hackman movie of the same name.
Comments: There’s something to be said for a complex drink that is so simple to prepare and requires only two ingredients. It layers extra flavor beyond the more basic brandy or whiskey on ice, but is less precious in preparation than an Old-Fashioned. For a drier, less sweet drink, some prefer the 2:1 ratio of cognac to amaretto.
