Black Widow

The only thing black about the BLACK WIDOW cocktail are the blackberries required in this recipe, a recipe from San Francisco bartender & author Duggan McDonnell. Fresh blackberries and basil are muddled, then double-strained within the mix of tequila, lime juice and agave syrup. The result is a berry-flavored herbal red pour that combines well with the other familiar margarita ingredients. This is a great way to enjoy the great flavor of blackberries without the seeds of the berry.

Requirements: tequila blanco, 2 blackberries, 3 basil leaves, lime juice, agave nectar

  • 1.5 oz. tequila
  • 1 oz. fresh lime juice
  • 1 tsp agave nectar
  • 2 black berries (plus 1 for garnish)
  • 3 basil leaves (plus 1 for garnish)

In a mixing glass or shaker, muddle 2 blackberries and 3 basil leaves. Add the other ingredients along with ice. Shake well to chill and double strain over a rocks glass filled with ice. Garnish with a blackberry on a skewer and one basil leaf.

Comments: Silver (blanco) tequila is best in this mix, because using an aged tequila like reposado would present other flavors like oak and caramel, masking the fresh berry & basil. This refreshing McDonnell recipe mix is best in the spring and summer when blackberries are in season. There are other unrelated recipes of the same name which result in a black pour and are festive for Halloween.

Happy U.S. Independence Day!
