Bolero

This dark rum and brandy version of the BOLERO is fruity yet complex. The proportions largely depend on your taste for dark rum (I prefer Myers’s Dark). My favored mix emphasizes the dark rum, but still has enough sweet and tart layers to make it interesting. It’s a great warm-weather refreshment for any occasion.
Requirements: dark rum, brandy or cognac, lime juice, orange juice, simple syrup, lime wheel
- 1.5–2 oz. dark rum
- 1 oz. brandy or cognac
- .75 oz. fresh lime juice
- .5 oz. orange juice
- .5 oz. simple syrup
- 1 lime wheel or wedge for garnish
Mix all liquid ingredients in an ice-filled shaker. Shake vigorously and strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with a lime wheel or wedge.
Comments: Some recipes suggest equal parts dark rum, brandy and lime juice (1 ounce each). The mix above is more balanced and, as mentioned, favors a stronger rum flavor. Unless you prefer a very tart drink, I wouldn’t use more than 3/4 ounce of lime juice.
