Old Fashioned

The OLD FASHIONED remains a favorite 200 years after its introduction. It’s one of the simplest mixed drinks to make, and it may have been the first step into the world of cocktails. It enhances your favorite whiskey-on-the-rocks with bitters, a touch of sugar, and an orange peel. While I prefer a sweeter whiskey like bourbon, drier rye is also a popular choice. Whatever your preferred whiskey, it’s fair game for an Old Fashioned.
Requirements: Bourbon or rye whiskey, sugar (demerara preferred) or simple syrup, orange or Angostura bitters, orange peel, club soda (optional)
- 2 oz. bourbon or rye
- 1/2 teaspoon sugar (demerara preferred) or simple syrup
- 3-4 dashes of orange bitters or 2 dashes Angostura bitters
- 1 tablespoon club soda or water (optional)
- 1 wide-strip orange peel
Add sugar or simple syrup, bitters and club soda (or water) into a mixing glass. Stir until the sugar is dissolved. Fill the mixing glass with ice, add the bourbon, and stir until well-chilled. Strain into a rocks glass over one large ice cube. Squeeze the oil from a wide orange peel over the glass and drop it in. A maraschino cherry may also be added.
Comments: If mixing and stirring the ingredients directly into the drinking glass using small or regular ice cubes, I let the melting ice do the job. Demerara sugar or demerara syrup is the preferred sweetener. Maple syrup can also sweeten an Old Fashioned and add a nice flavoring to bourbon or rye, especially during the fall season.
