Brown Derby

The BROWN DERBY is an excellent grapefruit-based cocktail for the bourbon aficionado. Using a sweet, juicy red grapefruit makes all the difference. The Brown Derby is easy to make: simply shake bourbon, grapefruit juice, and honey syrup together with ice. When you manage the particulars, such as creating a 50/50 honey-to-water syrup and using a sweet red grapefruit, these flavors blend beautifully.
Requirements: Bourbon, honey & water blend, fresh grapefruit juice
- 1.5 oz. bourbon
- 1 oz. fresh grapefruit juice
- 1/2 oz. honey syrup (mix 1 part honey with 1 part hot water & stir to blend)
- Grapefruit twist for garnish
Pre-strain the fresh grapefruit juice into an ice-filled shaker to remove pulp. Add the prepared honey syrup and bourbon. Shake vigorously for 10-15 seconds and strain into a cocktail glass.
History: The Brown Derby hails from 1930s Los Angeles. It is named after the hat-shaped diner located near the Vendome Club where it was created.
