Pumpkin Bourbon Old-Fashioned

Bourbon and maple syrup pair well in many cocktail recipes. So it’s not a far stretch to create a seasonal bourbon and pumpkin-flavored cocktail. This one is simply called a PUMPKIN BOURBON OLD-FASHIONED (or Pumpkin Old-Fashioned). It features bourbon complemented by the sweetness of pumpkin puree, maple syrup and Grand Marnier. Many recipes tend to be overly sweet and filling, but I prefer this version, which offers a lighter taste of pumpkin without excessive sweetness, allowing the bourbon to shine through. It’s seasonal, delicious, and fun.
Requirements: Bourbon, Grand Marnier, bitters, pumpkin puree, maple syrup, orange peel
- 1.5 oz. (1 jigger) bourbon
- 1/2 oz. Grand Marnier
- 1 dash bitters (either orange or Angostura)
- 1 level tablespoon pumpkin puree
- 1/2 oz. maple syrup
- Orange peel (or cinnamon sticks, rosemary sprigs) for garnish
Combine the ingredients in a shaker filled with ice. Shake vigorously to evenly distribute the puree, then strain into an old-fashioned glass filled with a large ice cube. Garnish with an orange peel (or add a rosemary sprig or cinnamon stick).
Comment: I keep the pumpkin puree to a maximum of 1 level tablespoon, but you can adjust it to your taste. If Grand Marnier isn’t available, you can substitute with orange curaçao or use 1/4 oz. Cointreau along with 1/4 oz. brandy. This cocktail is perfect for Thanksgiving or Halloween, though it may not be ideal before a big dinner.
