Winter Daiquiri

The WINTER DAIQUIRI is a richer, fuller-flavored version of the ever popular classic daiquiri associated with warm weather. This particular recipe from mixologist Eden Laurin of the Chicago bar The Violet Hour substitutes the more common white rum with two complex rums: Banks 5 Island Rum and Cruzan Black Strap rum. Laurin reportedly mixed the 3-5 year aged rum with a black-strap rum containing tones of molasses to produce a rich sipping daiquiri, one which would be good for the cold midwestern winters.

Requirements: 3-5 year aged rum (Banks 5 Island Rum preferred), black strap rum (Cruzan preferred), lime juice, simple syrup, lime wheel for garnish.

  • 1 oz. 3-5 year aged rum
  • 1 oz. black strap rum
  • 3/4 oz. lime juice
  • 3/4 oz. simple syrup
  • 1 lime wedge, garnish

Add ingredients to an ice-filled shaker. Shake vigorously and strain into a coupe glass. Garnish with a lime twist.

Comments: The Banks 5 Rum is a complex blend of aged rums from five islands and is preferred for this mix. I didn’t have it available and used Plantation Rum, an aged rum from three islands, which is a close second. I also used Gosling’s Black Seal rum in place of Cruzan Black Strap Rum. I found the two substitutes still created a complex and delicious sipping daiquiri, but look forward to using the preferred brands recommended.
