Zombie
The ZOMBIE has many interpretations since its 1934 origin. Donn Beach and his L.A. bar Don the Beachcomber is not only credited for the drink, but for starting the whole Tiki-style trend, which later included Trader Vic’s. The Zombie usually includes three types of rums, lime juice, a citrus (either orange or pineapple juice), and grenadine. The rum selections included a light rum, a dark rum and a 150-proof rum topper. The recipe below is one of the simplest:
Requirements: light rum, dark (El Dorado preferred) or golden rum, 150-proof rum (demerara rum preferred), orange juice, sweetened lime juice (Master of Mixes preferred), grenadine, garnishes of orange wedge, maraschino cherry and pineapple
- 1 oz. light rum
- 1 oz. golden or dark rum
- 1 oz. 150-proof rum
- 1/2 oz. sweetened lime juice
- 1/2 oz. grenadine
- 3 oz. orange juice
- 1 orange wedge, 1 pineapple wedge, 1 maraschino cherry
Add light rum, dark (or golden) rum, lime juice and orange juice to a shaker filled with ice. Fill a hurricane glass with ice and add grenadine to it so that grenadine sinks to the bottom. Shake the main mix to chill and pour into the hurricane glass. Add the one-ounce 150-proof rum to the top as a floater. Drop the garnishes into the drink and serve.
Comments: Supposedly Don Beach served the Zombie mix to a regular customer in order to cure a hangover; but the customer claimed it made him feel like a zombie, so it became known as such. Other ingredients sometimes used in the Zombie mix include falernum, Pernod, Angostura bitters, orange liqueur, passion fruit juice, cinnamon syrup, spiced rum, simple syrup and pineapple juice — not all in the same recipe. There have been contests to award the best Zombie recipe.
