Stanley

The STANLEY is a cocktail from Harry Craddock’s The Savoy Cocktail Book, published in 1930. It pairs up a dry gin with light rum, adds lemon juice and provides sweet balance from grenadine and simple syrup. Since the quantities are easier to measure in milliliters, the conversion from ounces is provided.
Requirements: light (white) rum, dry gin, grenadine, lemon juice, simple syrup
- 1 oz. light rum (30 ml.)
- 5/6 oz. dry gin (25 ml.)
- 1/2 oz. lemon juice (15 ml.)
- 1/6 oz. grenadine (5 ml.)
- 1/6 oz. simple syrup (5 ml.)
Combine ingredients in an ice-filled shaker. Shake vigorously and strain into a chilled cocktail glass.
Comments: If the proportions above are maintained, the Stanley is well-balanced and delicious. The first sip detects grenadine and might make someone who enjoys rum punch expect the same. But it quickly becomes a very sophisticated and drier cocktail for the palate to appreciate, thanks to the botanicals of gin and the conservative allowance of grenadine.
