Smokey Mezcal Margarita
The SMOKEY MEZCAL MARGARITA is the mezcal margarita as mixed with just lime juice and agave syrup. Orange bitters and a flamed orange peel garnish replaces the orange liqueur commonly used in a regular margarita. This mix has that cozy campfire appeal of a peaty scotch drink while maintaining the tequila-lime-orange blend of a margarita.
Requirements: mezcal (espadin), fresh lime juice, agave syrup, orange bitters, orange peel
- 2 oz. mezcal
- 1 oz. fresh lime juice
- 3/4 oz. agave syrup
- 2 dashes orange bitters
- 1 flamed orange peel, garnish
Add ingredients to an ice-filled shaker. Shake to chill and strain into a rocks glass filled with ice. Express the natural orange oils from an orange peel over the top of the drink. Lightly char the outside of the peel and drop it into the glass.
Comments: For a less smokey flavor, the mezcal could be decreased to one ounce and add one ounce of regular silver tequila. Also, the agave syrup can be dropped to 1/2 ounce for those who prefer less sweet.
Mezcal Margarita: If your preference is to parallel the blend of a standard (silver tequila) margarita, the recommended mix is as follows: 2 oz.mezcal, 1 oz.Cointreau, 3/4 oz.lime juice, 1/2 oz.agave syrup.
