Morning Glory

The MORNING GLORY is a delicious 1906 bourbon/brandy cocktail from Louis’ Mixed Drinks. The dominant flavors come from bourbon and brandy (or cognac), complemented by maraschino liqueur and bitters. Absinthe adds a final touch, providing a prominent aroma as the glass tips toward the mouth.

Requirements: bourbon, brandy (or cognac), maraschino liqueur (Luxardo preferred), orange & Angostura bitters, simple syrup, absinthe

  • 2 oz. bourbon
  • 1 oz. brandy (or cognac)
  • 1 dash maraschino liqueur
  • 1 dash orange bitters
  • 1 dash Angostura bitters
  • 3/8 oz. simple syrup
  • 1 dash absinthe (approximately 1 tsp.)

Add all ingredients except absinthe to an ice-filled mixing glass. Stir to chill and strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Add a dash of absinthe as a topper.

Comments: As noted, the rich flavors of bourbon and brandy are beautifully balanced by the other ingredients, with the finish revealing hints of cherry, orange, and anise.
