Jack Rose

The JACK ROSE is a lost classic from the 1910s that, for no particular reason, was pushed aside by time. But the smooth blend of applejack, lemon juice and grenadine earns it a place in the cocktail rotation. With just three key ingredients, it’s a quick and easy drink to prepare.
Requirements: Laird’s Applejack brandy, grenadine, lemon juice, Peychaud’s bitters (optional), lemon twist
- 2 oz. applejack brandy
- 1/2 oz. grenadine
- 3/4 oz. lemon juice
- 1 dash Peychaud’s bitters
- 1 lemon twist for garnish
Combine the liquid ingredients in an ice-filled shaker. Shake for 15-20 seconds and strain into a coupe or martini glass. Garnish with a lemon twist.
History: Hemingway’s The Sun Also Rises, which takes place post-WWI in Paris and Spain, references the Jack Rose several times as a go-to cocktail of the main characters.
Comments: This sweet and tart mix combined with the mellow flavor of applejack brandy is refreshing any time of the year. It presents itself beautifully at a dinner or cocktail party as well.
