Irish Margarita

The IRISH MARGARITA uses the same template as a standard tequila margarita but substitutes Irish whiskey for the more common tequila. Most recipes recommend Grand Marnier as the preferred orange liqueur, though Cointreau and Triple Sec are occasionally used. A drop of green food coloring can be added to turn the mix into a celebratory Saint Patrick’s Day drink.

Requirements: Irish whiskey, orange liqueur (Grand Marnier preferred), fresh lime juice, agave syrup, lime wheel for garnish

  • 2 oz. Irish whiskey
  • 1 oz. orange liqueur (Grand Marnier preferred)
  • 1 oz. lime juice
  • 1/2 oz. agave syrup
  • 1 lime wheel for garnish

Rub a lime wedge around the rim of a margarita or Old-Fashioned glass and dip it in salt to coat the edge. Add ice to the glass. Combine the ingredients in an ice-filled shaker. Shake to chill and then pour into the ice-filled glass. Garnish with a lime wheel.

Comments: This drink has variations, some quite complex, with up to eight ingredients. The more common additives include two ounces of sweet & sour mix or Limeade while reducing fresh lime juice and orange liqueur to 1/2 ounce each. Some recipes substitute pineapple juice for sweet & sour mix in equal measure. The mix above is unexpectedly good and a nice upscale way to celebrate Saint Patrick’s Day without over-complicating it.
