Bahama Mama
The BAHAMA MAMA is a warm-weather drink of choice when you’re in the mood for a fruity tropical rum cocktail. If you have its five main ingredients, just a couple of minor extras will finish the mix.
REQUIREMENTS: white rum, coconut rum, dark rum, orange juice, pineapple juice, grenadine, Kahlua (optional), orange slice & cherry for garnish
- 1 oz. white rum
- 1 oz. coconut rum
- 1 oz. dark rum
- 2 oz. orange juice
- 2 oz. pineapple juice
- .25 oz. grenadine and/or .25 oz.Kahlua (optional)
- 1 cherry & orange slice for garnish
Add ice to a hurricane or Collins glass. Pour in the two juices, white rum & coconut rum. Carefully and slowly pour in grenadine inside the rim of the glass to let it sink to the glass bottom. Slowly pour the dark rum over the top to create a floater. Add cherry and/or orange slice for garnish. The drink will appear layered when served, but should be stirred well before drinking.
Comments: The original mid-century Bahama Mama mix reportedly uses a splash of coffee liqueur, which tones down the fruit juice sweetness and gives it more complexity and depth, while still remaining tropical. I’ve used both the grenadine for color and the Kahlua for added richness both at the same time, although most recipes would call for one or the other. If you choose to use a dash of Kahlua, add it just before stirring.
Original Bahama Mama Recipe:
- 1 oz. coconut rum
- 1 oz. dark rum
- 1/2 oz. Kahlua or Tia Maria
- 2.5 oz. pineapple juice
- 3/4 ox. lemon juice
- cherry & pineapple wedge garnish
Add liquid ingredients to ice-filled shaker. Shake to chill and strain into a hurricane or Collins glass over fresh ice. Garnish with cherry & pineapple wedge.
