Satan’s Whiskers
Despite its name, SATAN’S WHISKERS is anything but the drink from hell. It is a complex blend of sweet, bitter & citrusy orange layers. It’s “perfect” in being equal parts gin, sweet vermouth, dry vermouth, orange juice and Grand Marnier. Using Grand Marnier is considered the “straight” version; otherwise substituting with orange curacao is considered the “curled” version. Satan’s Whiskers has an old world flavor to savor in each sip. It should emerge from its orange Halloween glow and land on every bar cocktail menu.
Requirements: dry gin, sweet & dry vermouth, orange juice, Grand Marnier (or orange curacao), orange bitters, orange twist
- 1/2 oz. gin
- 1/2 oz. sweet vermouth
- 1/2 oz. dry vermouth
- 1/2 oz. fresh orange juice
- 1/2 oz. Grand Marnier or orange curacao
- 2 dashes orange bitters (6 dashes if using curacao)
- 1 orange twist for garnish
Add the liquid ingredients to an ice-filled shaker. Shake and strain into a chilled coup or cocktail glass. Garnish with an orange twist.
Comment: The Bronx cocktail is a similar combination but adds more gin. Some Satan’s recipes call for 2/3 ounces (20 mil.) in the gin/vermouth/O.J. combo and 1/3 oz. (10 ml.) Grand Marnier. The curled version calls for up to six dashes orange bitters. The variations can be explored and ultimately you might find your perfect mix at the home bar.
History: This drink is old and has probably been through many subtle changes over the years. It dates back to the 1930’s and is credited to Harry Craddock, published in the Savoy Cocktail Book.
