Whiskey Smash
The WHISKEY SMASH is very similar to a Mint Julep, but combines with lemon juice to produce a tasty, minty Whiskey Sour. The “smash” likely refers to the muddling of lemon wedges and mint before adding bourbon (rye or Canadian whiskey may also be used). It’s important to have a good muddler which will release not only the juices from lemon, but also the oils in the peel.
- 2 oz. whiskey (bourbon is most common)
- 3/4 oz. simple syrup
- 4 lemon wedges
- 4 or 5 mint leaves (rinsed beforehand)
Muddle the lemon wedges in a shaker. Add the mint leaves and muddle again together 4 or 5 times. Add bourbon (or favorite whiskey), simple syrup, ice and shake together until chilled. Double strain into a rocks glass with fresh ice or with one large single ice cube. Garnish with a mint sprig.
History: The Whiskey Smash first appeared in an 1887 bartender’s guide, but was preceded by very similar drinks like the julep and citrusy Whiskey Sour. It regained popularity during the late 1980’s and 1990’s at New York’s Rainbow Room.
