Smokey Mezcal Margarita

The SMOKEY MEZCAL MARGARITA is a mezcal espadin mixed with just lime juice and agave syrup. Orange bitters and a flamed orange peel garnish replace the orange liqueur commonly used in a regular margarita. This mix has the cozy campfire appeal of a peaty Scotch drink while maintaining the tequila-lime-orange blend of a margarita.
Requirements: mezcal (espadin), fresh lime juice, agave syrup, orange bitters, orange peel
- 2 oz. mezcal
- 1 oz. fresh lime juice
- 3/4 oz. agave syrup
- 2 dashes orange bitters
- 1 flamed orange peel, garnish
Add ingredients to an ice-filled shaker. Shake to chill and strain into a rocks glass filled with ice. Express the natural orange oils from an orange peel over the top of the drink. Lightly char the outside of the peel and drop it into the glass.
Comments: For a less smoky flavor, the mezcal can be decreased to one ounce, and one ounce of regular silver tequila can be added. Also, the agave syrup can be reduced to 1/2 ounce for those who prefer it less sweet.
Mezcal Margarita: If you prefer to parallel the blend of a standard silver tequila margarita, the recommended mix is as follows: 2 oz. mezcal, 1 oz. Cointreau, 3/4 oz. lime juice, 1/2 oz. agave syrup.
