Mezcal Mule
The smoky version of a Moscow Mule is the MEZCAL MULE. For the mezcal aficionado, it’s a fun and easy way to enjoy this smoky-flavored agave-derived spirit. It incorporates the same ginger beer and lime juice as the Moscow Mule and can be mixed directly into the serving glass.
Requirements: mezcal (espadin preferred), ginger beer, lime juice, lime wheel
- 2 oz. mezcal
- 1/2 oz. lime juice
- 5-6 oz. ginger beer
- 1 lime wheel garnish
Add ice to a chilled Collins or rocks glass. Mix mezcal and lime juice into the glass and stir. Top off the glass with chilled ginger beer. Stir again gently and garnish with a lime wheel.
Comments: Some, myself included, find that using mezcal alone in the recipe is a bit too sharp and smokey when combined with ginger beer. So, a remedy is to reduce the mezcal by half (1 oz.) and add one ounce of silver tequila blanco in its place to the mix. Either way, it’s a quick preparation and delicious.
History: The original vodka & ginger beer combo (Moscow Mule) originated in 1941, courtesy of a Los Angeles bartender. Substitutions for vodka (e.g. bourbon, tequila) became popular later in the century. The Mezcal Mule was reportedly created by Jim Meehan at his NYC bar in 2008.
