Mezcal Mule

The smoky version of a Moscow Mule is the MEZCAL MULE. For mezcal aficionados, this cocktail offers a fun and easy way to enjoy the smoky flavor of this agave-derived spirit. It contains the same ginger beer and lime juice as the classic Moscow Mule and can be mixed directly in the serving glass.
Requirements: mezcal (espadin preferred), ginger beer, lime juice, lime wheel
- 2 oz. mezcal
- 1/2 oz. lime juice
- 5-6 oz. ginger beer
- 1 lime wheel garnish
Fill a chilled Collins or rocks glass with ice. In the glass, mix the mezcal and lime juice, then stir. Top off the glass with chilled ginger beer. Stir gently once more and garnish with a lime wheel.
Comments: Some, myself included, find that using mezcal alone in this recipe can be a bit too sharp and smoky when combined with ginger beer. A remedy is to reduce the mezcal to 1 oz. and add 1 oz. of silver tequila blanco in its place. Either way, it’s a quick preparation and delicious.
History: The original vodka and ginger beer combination (Moscow Mule) originated in 1941, thanks to a Los Angeles bartender. Substitutions for vodka, such as bourbon and tequila, gained popularity later in the century. The Mezcal Mule was reportedly created by bartender and journalist Jim Meehan at his NYC bar in 2008.
