Gin Sling
The GIN SLING differentiates itself from other gin drinks by introducing sweet vermouth and bitters to the often-used lemon juice and club soda (see similar cocktail links below). As a truly classic American drink, it has stood the test of time because it balances sweet with sour, botanical and bitter — all the while offering flavorful refreshment. It’s also a perfect cooler on hot days.
Requirements: dry gin, sweet vermouth, fresh lemon juice, aromatic bitters, simple syrup, club soda or seltzer, lemon twist or spiral for garnish
- 1.5 oz. gin
- 3/4 oz. sweet vermouth
- 3/4 oz. lemon juice
- 3/4 oz. simple syrup
- 2-3 dashes aromatic bitters
- 3-4 oz. club soda or seltzer
- 1 lemon twist/spiral
Add all liquid ingredients except club soda to an ice-filled shaker. Shake to cool and pour into a chilled highball glass filled with ice. Top off the mix with club soda or seltzer. Stir gently and garnish with a lemon twist or spiral.
Comments: Use a middle-grade or better sweet vermouth (Dolin, Cinzano or Carpano Antica recommended) and a good dry gin. As is often the case, letting the drink sit in ice on a warm day will water down the drink and dilute the flavor. The Gin Sling can become a Rum Sling or a Bourbon Sling by replacing the same measurement of gin with rum or bourbon.
History: The “sling” was a phrase used before the word “cocktail” existed. It likely referred to “slinging back” a drink at anytime of the day, and in the early days of American history was often abused. The Gin Sling was popular as early as 1800 and before. Like many drinks, this one has gone through variations. The mix above is the common offering for the modern-day drinker.
