Boomerang

If you’ve got a good bottle of London dry gin, the BOOMERANG offers an expanded and more flavorful variation of a Gin Martini. It’s really just a couple of adjustments: The proportions are slightly different and maraschino liqueur is added to the mix. When you’re in the mood for a martini, this gin variation is one to remember.
Required: Dry gin, dry vermouth, maraschino liqueur (Luxardo preferred), Angostura bitters, Lemon peel
- 2 oz. dry gin
- 1 oz. dry vermouth
- 1 teaspoon maraschino liqueur
- 2 dashes Angostura bitters
- 1 lemon peel for garnish
Combine all liquid ingredients into an ice-filled shaker. Shake vigorously and strain into a cocktail glass. Garnish with a lemon twist or peel and serve straight up.
Comments: The Boomerang is sometimes served with rye whiskey, or sometimes resembles a Bronx cocktail; but this recipe is neither. This particular mix dates back further and is definitely a favorite. It may also be stirred and strained into the glass rather than shaken. If maraschino liqueur isn’t available, you can improvise with the juice from a jar of maraschino cherries, although it will be sweeter.
The “boomerang” effect, according to the Oxford dictionary, can describe any action that returns to its originator, often with negative consequences. In the case of the Boomerang cocktail, however, the karma feels good and positive consequences have come around. Its return invites you to kick back at home and put your feet up.
HAPPY FATHER’S DAY!
