North Garden

The NORTH GARDEN is an NYC-created Old-Fashioned variation that adds hints of peat from Scotch, notes of apple from apple brandy, and the familiar sweet character of bourbon — all flavors with autumn appeal. While a garnish is optional, sweetening with a touch of demerara syrup is essential.
Requirements: Apple Brandy (Laird’s Bonded preferred), bourbon, peated Scotch whisky, demerara syrup, Angostura bitters
- 1.5 oz. apple brandy
- 3/4 oz. bourbon
- 1/4 oz. Scotch whisky
- 3/4 tsp demerara syrup
- 2 dashes Angostura bitters
Stir all ingredients in an ice-filled mixing glass to chill. Strain into an Old-Fashioned glass over a large ice cube.
History: According to Amanda Schuster’s book New York Cocktails, this Old-Fashioned variation was refined and popularized at New York’s East Village bar, Death & Co., around 2011. It evolved from an earlier version developed at New York’s Dram. The talented team at Death & Co. is responsible for creating many cocktail recipes now used by bars worldwide.
Comments: This Old-Fashioned variation is enjoyable even if you don’t have the exact spirits on hand. I’ve used Laird’s Applejack Brandy instead of Laird’s Bonded Apple Brandy and Dewar’s instead of a smokier Laphroaig, and the basic cocktail remains excellent.
