Ward 8

Out of 1898 Boston comes WARD 8, a variation of the Whiskey Sour that features rye whiskey and lemon juice. The Ward 8 enhances the original recipe by adding orange juice and grenadine, resulting in a complexity and balance that elevate it beyond the traditional Whiskey Sour. It’s wonderfully flavorful and interesting, enough so that it deserves a revival.
REQUIREMENTS: rye whiskey, lemon juice, orange juice, grenadine, cocktail cherry and/or orange wedge for garnish
- 2 oz. rye whiskey
- 3/4 oz. lemon juice
- 3/4 oz. orange juice
- 1 tsp grenadine
Combine the liquid ingredients in an ice-filled shaker. Shake vigorously and strain into a coupe glass. Garnish with a cocktail cherry and/or an orange wedge.
COMMENTS: Recommended rye whiskies for the Ward 8 include Bulleit, Woodford Reserve, Knob Creek, Crown Royal, and Sazerac. If you prefer a sweeter drink, you can increase the grenadine to two teaspoons. Substituting bourbon for rye is also acceptable, but you may want to use less grenadine in that case.
HISTORY: Named after a Boston election district in 1898, Ward #8 played a role in securing victory for political figure Martin M. Lomasney in the state legislature. The cocktail was created to celebrate his election. While the state election of that year has faded from memory, the cocktail endures.
